Premarket routine

Ten minutes, the same ten minutes, every single morning.

The traders who last aren't the ones with the most screens. They're the ones whose 9:15 looks identical every day. A premarket routine isn't preparation for the edge; done identically for months, it is the edge. Here is ours, timed.

01

Why the order matters

The routine runs market → names → structure → plan, wide to narrow, because reversing it is how traders marry a ticker at 8 am and ignore everything the tape says afterwards. Context first, candidates second, levels third, and the plan written last, when it can still be conditional instead of a justification.

Write the plan down before the bell, even two lines. A plan that exists only in your head at 9:29 is renegotiated by 9:31, and the journal can only grade you against something written.

Checklist

The ten minutes

Times are targets, not laws. The order is the law.

  1. 0:00 to 1:00Market context: futures, any macro print due, sector doing the dragging. One minute. You trade names, not the S&P, but you need to know which way the wind blows.
  2. 1:00 to 3:00The board: today's in-play names with gap, adjusted RVOL, dollar volume, float and catalyst. Read the cuts too. Knowing why a name failed the filter sharpens what passing means.
  3. 3:00 to 5:00Catalysts at source: open the actual filing or PR for your top two or three, not the headline. Check the freshness label; a recycled story changes the whole plan.
  4. 5:00 to 7:00Structure: premarket high and low, prior day high, where VWAP will anchor, halt risk at this float band. Mark the levels you'd act at, both directions.
  5. 7:00 to 9:00The plan, written: for each A-name, the trigger you need to see, the entry, the structural stop, the size that makes that stop one R. If you can't finish the sentence, it's a watch, not a trade.
  6. 9:00 to 10:00The don'ts: name the trap you're most likely to fall for today: chasing the open, revenge-trading yesterday's loser, oversizing the gappiest name. Saying it out loud is cheap insurance.
